I had the opportunity to sit down with the four chemical engineering students (Jasmina Omri, Frédérique Bélanger, Tyler Provencal, and Joey Fyfe) who made up the Bharti School of Engineering’s Consulting Engineering team to ask them about their experiences. The group came in first at the 2016 Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) in Waterloo and then fourth at the 2016 Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) in Montreal. Continue reading

Recently, there was an article in University Affairs about heraldry that described the history and symbolism associated with the coats of arms of a few Canadian universities.[1] While Laurentian’s coat of arms was shown and mentioned briefly, its features were not explained in any detail. This omission piqued my interest and spurred a little investigation.

It turns out that there is a Canadian Heraldic Authority (CHA), headed by the Governor General of Canada, that is responsible for administering coats of arms and related symbols in this country. They also maintain a registry that explains the symbolic meaning of the various features. Continue reading

Promo video for Laurentian University’s engineering program

The Ontario University Fair (OUF) will be taking place this weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Many of my colleagues from all over Ontario will be in attendance to meet prospective students trying to make decisions about their post-secondary education.

Laurentian University has prepared promotional videos for use at OUF which highlight four of the many programs we offer. Each video follows the activities of a particular student enrolled in that program. One of our mechanical engineering students was selected for profiling. You can see his video below. It also contains cameos by some of our mechanical faculty and students, as well as beautiful footage of the Laurentian campus and the city of Greater Sudbury. Continue reading
